Senior Support Worker 10/2018 - current
Lanarkshire Association for Mental Health, Hamilton, Scotland United Kingdom
Industry: Social Services
Working with individuals with severe and enduring mental health issues. Now in a supervisory role with increased decision making and authority.
Since joining the organisation, I have since progressed to working as a senior support worker in the North Lancashire locality working within the Self-Directed Support service. This involves additional case management responsibilities, and intensely liaising with professionals from particularly but not limited to, social work and healthcare fields i.e attending reviews, case conferences, submitting support plans and just general coordination. Typical work carried out alongside individuals includes risk assessments, initial assessments, case reviews, hospital discharge planning, recording daily engagements and work with clients. This is especially prevalent on a decision-making level alongside individuals with exceptionally challenging mental health, relating to their care and wellbeing. This includes regularly attending and completing client case reviews as well as assisting individuals to tailor their care provision to their needs and wishes. Also involved in management of staff team and working alongside service manager to develop staff work rotas, manage service resources and budgets and as well as to make management decisions concerning the care of clients, supervision and the working conditions for staff. Work closely with staff team and management to ensure all paperwork and record keeping is accurately maintained, and additionally have been involved in recent staff inductions for new starts. Management of organisational objectives and resources is an ongoing aspect of the role, in terms of handling budgets, staff availability and seeking new work, business and awareness for the organisation. Also participate in an on call rota system with other management members on a bi-monthly basis, which involves being a point of contact for lone working staff on evenings and weekends.--
Crisis Intervention Support Worker 01/2018 - 10/2018
Lanarkshire Association for Mental Health, Hamilton, Scotland United Kingdom
Industry: Social Services
Working with individuals with severe and enduring mental ill-health. Short term work with clients over a 12 week period.
Based in a short-term crisis support service, my role is to work directly alongside a number of clients over a period of approximately 12 weeks, or on an ongoing basis with clients within the Self-Directed Support service, in order to enhance the standard of living experienced by clients whom are dealing with severe and enduring mental ill health. This includes a range of individuals with various conditions, such as schizophrenia, bipolar and personality disorder. The service is very task orientated and this involves providing support and encouragement with various issues such as self-neglect, welfare, house management, social interaction and medication, and is designed to improve and support clients to function independently. All work requires putting together a plan which is reviewed by the end of a specific agreed date with each person in order to assess agreed goals, ambitions and the progress of identified issues from the outset, and currently I lead work with four individuals whom this concerns. Much of my job entails collaborating with other professionals whom often refer and provide alternative support to clients notably social work and health professionals, particularly within Community Mental Health Teams. Working in partnership with these groups has allowed me to further develop my knowledge of important aspects of mental health delivery in areas such as law and medication. I have worked in other areas within North Lanarkshire that previously I had little knowledge of in terms of local services and in the issues within these areas, which has additionally extended my knowledge of the wider locality. This has proven particularly crucial when representing clients in a professional setting as it has allowed me to build relationships and gain familiarity with other colleagues within mental health service provision in North Lanarkshire. Many of the clients whom I work alongside currently or at one time have been placed under various treatment orders, whether within a specific place such as a hospital or now more increasingly in the community. I am often executing statutory aspects of each individual’s care such as by exercising welfare or financial guardianship duties or by ensuring that due to mental disorder or ill-health, individuals are able to live safely in their communities free from risk to themselves or others. These duties I have implemented in conjunction with both short term clients and those in receipt of Self-Directed Support.--
