Michigan -- it's shaped like a mitten, and higher education fits the state like a glove. The University of Michigan has been a leader in the state's education effort since its founding in 1817. With more than 40,000 students and about 5,700 faculty members scattered across three campuses in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint, the university's diverse academic units span such areas of study as architecture, education, law, medicine, music, and social work. Notable alumni include the late President Gerald Ford (the university is home to the Gerald R. Ford Library and the Ford School of Public Policy) and playwright Arthur Miller. In addition to state funding, the university is supported by a $5.1 billion endowment. More from Hoovers »

Note: This page reports Labor Condition Application(LCA) and Labor Certification(LC) filed by University of Michigan for H1B Visa and Green Card. The data only indicates the number of applications filed by University of Michigan. It does not mean that University of Michigan actually got the visa and hired the workers.

Labor Condition Application(LCA) is different from Labor Certification(LC). LC is for employment based green card while LCA is for H1B visa. Our LCA data not only includes those filed for new h1b visa applications, but also those for H1B Visa tranfers and renews.

University of Michigan applied for 4,313 LC and LCA since 2001. But this does not mean they really hired 4,313 foreign workers during this period. The visa application might have been denied. When an employee renews or transfers his H1B Visa, he will also file a new LCA application. Department of Labor(DOL) typically certifies more than 3 times the number of foreign work requests than the number of H-1B visas issued by USCIS. So there is no one to one relationship between the number of workers certified by the DOL and the number of H1B work visas issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
