I worked as a researcher at the Marine Science Institute, University of the Philippines-Diliman.
I did mesophotic coral mapping of different regions in the Philippines. I used multibeam echo sounder to acquire the depths of the sea, and by processing and analyzing these data, I was able to render a 3D image of the sea floor. I also used side scan sonar to create an image of the sea floor. By comparing the side scan image with the 3D image, I was able to confirm the presence of large features that can represent the coral reefs on depths below 30 meters. These are normally inaccessible to divers and are dangerous to survey manually. The results of this research are beneficial in making policies to extend marine protected areas, and protecting marine wild life and natural resources from human activities. The data can also be used to predict trends and factors in local sea level for the past thousand years.--
