The topic of the research was EFFECTS OF PEANUT BASED THERAPEUTIC FOOD ENRICHED WITH EDIBLE INSECTS ON RECOVERING HEPATOLOGICAL AND RENAL FUNCTIONS OF LOW PROTEIN INDUCED ALBINO RATS. We checked for the effect of edible insect,as an alternative sour e of protein instead of milk, on recovering kwashiorkor.
Fifty (50) albino rats were divided into ten groups of five rats and were allowed to acclimatize for 7 days feeding them with the normal commercial diet and water. After 7 days, the rats were offered their respective diets inducing them with malnutrition (2% casein: low protein diet and 20% casein: casein diet) for 21 days. After feeding on low protein diet, the casein diet and some of the low protein diet group were picked and sacrificed. The remaining low protein rats were treated with the different formulations of peanut-based therapeutic food for 28 days then they were sacrificed. The Heart and brain tissues were washed and homogenized (100mg in 10ml buffer) in 0.1mol/L phosphate buffered saline. The homogenates were centrifuged for 15 minutes and the resulting supernatants were separated and used for biochemical assays to determine their cardiovascular and neurological activity.--
