Embedded Software Engineer 08/1999 - 07/2002
GE Transporation Systems, Erie, PA United States
Industry: Locomotive Manufacturers
Embedded Software for Locomotive Control Systems worked on Vehicle control software for various locomotives. C/C++ with RTOS
During my tenure at GE Transportation Systems (Erie, PA, USA), I contributed to the design and development of safety-critical embedded software for locomotive control systems, addressing complex challenges in real-time operations, communication, and predictive maintenance. My work spanned multiple high-impact projects that directly enhanced operational safety, reliability, and efficiency across GE’s global railway fleet. In the Locomotive Control Systems project, GE required reliable real-time embedded software capable of ensuring safe train operations under diverse and demanding conditions. As part of the engineering team, I designed and implemented embedded modules in C/C++, focusing on deterministic performance for control, monitoring, and diagnostics. These modules were seamlessly integrated with locomotive subsystems such as braking, traction, and communication. I conducted rigorous system-level simulations and participated in field testing to validate performance. The result was a high-reliability software platform that significantly improved locomotive safety and efficiency, contributing to successful global deployments. For the Safety-Critical System Development initiative, the priority was compliance with stringent reliability and safety standards, as even minor failures could lead to severe risks. I implemented fault-tolerant design principles using real-time operating system features and watchdog mechanisms. Finally, in the Diagnostics and Predictive Maintenance program, I developed embedded diagnostic modules capable of monitoring subsystem performance, detecting anomalies, and generating predictive alerts. Working closely with cross-functional teams in both the U.S. and India, I integrated these diagnostic features into onboard display systems and backend platforms. This innovation provided predictive maintenance capabilities, reducing unscheduled downtime and lowering operational costs for railway operators. Together, these projects underscore my ability to deliver mission-critical embedded solutions in the transportation domain, ensuring compliance with safety standards, enabling predictive insights, and driving measurable improvements in system performance and reliability.--
