President Obama is making major policy changes to fix the broken immigration system. He wants to create more jobs, issue more visas to save one job: his job!
- On July 22, the House Judiciary Committee approved bill to eliminate green card lottery.
- On August 2, the USCIS released new visa policy to attract and retain foreign workers.
- On August 18, the White House announced illegal immigrants could stay and apply for work permit.
The last announcement was the most surprising and controversial. It angered immigration hard-liners and pleased Hispanic advocacy groups. Many legal immigrants also worry about the impact: will we have to wait even longer for green card?
"There are more than 10 million people who are in the U.S. illegally; it's clear that we can't deport such a large number", a White House official wrote on his blog. It makes sense to allow those who haven't committed crimes and who aren't considered a threat to public safety stay and apply for work permit in United States.
